Your mother is recovering from surgery and she needs someone to care for her during the day while you are at work. After a couple weeks, you notice that your mother's medications have been empty long before they were supposed to be. Your mother has lost weight and just does not seem like her normal self. When talking to her, she admits that she doesn't feel comfortable being left alone with the care provider. Is the care provider harming your mother? What should you do about this?

Some common signs of elder abuse:

Unexplained bruises-fractures-burns

Unusual weight loss-gain

Insomnia

Agitation

Too little-too much medication

Reports of screaming-fighting-crying from neighbors

Poor hygiene, dental neglect, bald spots

First of all, these signs may be due to your parent's illness rather than abuse. They may not like losing their independence and the fact that someone has to take care of them. It is hard for them to accept the fact that they can no longer do the things they have always done.

However, once detected, these suspicious findings should not be overlooked; they should be investigated further.

If elder abuse is not reported or corrected, it may become even more severe. Do not hesitate to act on your suspicions; it is better to be wrong than to have someone suffer needlessly. Most of the time, your suspicions will turn out to be nothing. Contact 123Pi and we will find out for you in a confidential manner.
