What about Scams and Charities? |
123Pi wants you to be aware that while there are many worthwhile and reputable fundraising and charitable organizations, there are also many out there that are not. Before you agree to give money or purchase a product, know who and what you are giving it for and how much of the proceeds are actually going to the non-profit/charitable organization. |
Many meaningful organizations hire deceptive fundraising outfits that will guarantee a dollar amount to the organization if they just let them use their name. In some instances, it is a percentage-based deal. Either way, you can bet the fundraising company will make more than the charity and, in some cases, a whole lot more. If you really want to give to a charitable cause, consider giving directly to the organization. |
Don't be fooled. Give, but give wisely. |
Unfortunately, you should know that there are a number of people and companies that pull scams on unsuspecting consumers. Some are aimed mainly at our older population, while some are intended for everyone. Either way, they hurt innocent people every day. If caught, some people can be prosecuted, have civil action taken against them, or lose any license they may have. Some are not illegal and nothing can be done. The best way to avoid these scams is to follow a few basic rules. |
Looks can be deceiving. Just because someone appears to be legitimate doesn't mean they actually are. This holds true for businesses as well. |
Read carefully any document no matter how long it is before signing it. Know what you are committing to. |
Be wary of telemarketers. Some of the sales pitches include phony prizes that you have to pay for, illegal sweepstakes, worthless investments and crooked charities. |
Watch for high-pressured sales tactics like "You must act now!" If someone uses that tactic, act by saying no thanks. |
Read carefully anything that you receive in the mail that says you have won something. Chances are you haven't and it's just a marketing strategy to get you to buy something. |
Always remember that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. |
If you have any reservations about a person or company, remember you can always count on 123Pi to perform a comprehensive background investigation. Then, you will know for certain that you are not being scammed or making an ill-informed decision. |
